Summer Car Maintenance Tips

Jul 30, 2020
It's probably safe to say everyone looks forward to the warmer summer months, especially after a cold winter. While these warmer days may be enjoyable for you, they can present some challenges to your vehicle. High temperatures can affect your vehicle and push it beyond its limits. This could lead to breakdown and faster wear and tear. If you are looking for ways to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape throughout the summer months, take a look at some of the suggestions below.

Engine

It's important to keep your engine cool whenever you are using it. That is where the cooling system comes into play. This system helps protect your engine from overheating. In order for it to function properly, it should be flushed out periodically, as recommended by the manufacturer. Periodically check the hoses and drive belts for any cracks or soft spots which could lead to problems. Another area to check within the engine is the serpentine belt. Over time this belt will deteriorate and become loose. Check it from time to time to make sure there are no cracks or missing pieces.

Tires

Make sure your tires are always properly inflated. Under-inflated tires can cause blowouts, especially when the road is extremely hot, which is common in the College Station, Bryan, and Navasota, TX areas during the summer months. If your tires need air, always follow the recommendations in your vehicle owner’s manual.

Battery

The summer heat can affect your battery, especially if it is working hard to keep you cool as you drive down the road. Check your battery for corrosion and make sure the clamps are tight. If your battery is more than three years old, it might be a good idea to have it tested.

Fluids

Your vehicle carries a variety of fluids to keep parts working properly. When these fluid levels are low it increases the possibility of your vehicle overheating and not working efficiently. Every so often, check your vehicle's fluids to make sure they are at the correct levels. If any fluids, including the motor oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, or transmission fluid need to be topped off, consult your owner’s manual. Make sure you are getting oil changes at the recommended times as well.

Wipers

Rainy weather and summer often go hand in hand. When strong rain storms roll through the College Station, Bryan, and Navasota, TX areas, you want to be sure you can see clearly while driving instead of having to look through big streaks across your windshield. Check and replace your wipers often.

Air Conditioner

No one wants to be driving around College Station, Bryan, or Navasota, TX in the dead of summer without AC. If your automobile air conditioning is not working properly, it might be losing Freon, which isn't good for your vehicle or the atmosphere. Have your AC checked by a certified technician.

Sunshades

When your car is not being used, park it in a shady area. If you can't, use a dashboard sunshade. This will protect the dashboard against ultraviolet rays and help your vehicle stay a little cooler inside.
